Ballet fantasies

Workshop with Joseph Simon

Working with movement languages as “sticky feet” and work-titles as “ballet fantasies”, Joseph experiments with alternative forms of ballet, which break hierarchies and invite for groove and individuality from a perspective of HipHop philosophy, while mixing ballet, breaking, house dance and dance hall.

ABOUT

Joseph Simon (France, 1989) graduated from ArtEZ School of Dance, Arnhem  in 2014. His work explores the hybridity between classical ballet and urban dance forms, particularly House dance and Hip-hop, which he actively practices. Positioned at the intersection of academic dance and street/club dance cultures, his work examines how ballet encounters subcultural movements based on community, self-empowerment, and liberation.
